Q: How does getting a custom designed cover work?
Please check out my cover design process here for an in depth look on what I will do for you.
Q: What information do you need for the back of the jacket?
A 50-200 word synopsis of the book. Optional information includes: website, blurbs, your bio or headshot. POD (print on demand) services will automatically add the bar code.
Q: What information do you need for the front cover?
The book title and your author name. But you might also consider creating a tag line or adding a promo quote if you have one, if you want.
Q: My title or other cover text isn't final yet. Can we still begin the design process?
This isn't ideal. Designs are composed very deliberately with much forethought. To make sure I deliver you the best product possible, I need to have that information ahead of time.

Q: When do you do custom photography for a cover?
Sometimes the best route for a cover is to do a custom shoot, whether it is for the entire cover or just a few elements. If I feel a superior cover could be achieved by custom photography, I will present it as an option. Under most circumstances, I will be able to create your cover with stock photos and digital painting.
Q: How much does custom photography cost?
Custom shoots will increase the cost of the cover, as it typically requires finding a model, shooting on location, buying props, etc. Anything purchased for the shoot will be added to the cost of the cover in addition to on-location shoot time.
Q: Will it change how long a cover takes to make?
Yes. Custom shoots will add a minimum of 1 week to design time.
Q: Will the photos be used for other projects?
Custom shots will never be used for another book cover or client. However, I retain the right to display the photos in a portfolio context.
Q: What if I need future revisions on my design?
If you only need a minor change, such as a name or website edit, I will make the alteration free of charge (limit 2 edits). However, as book covers are temperamental and carefully crafted, significant design changes often require a lot of work. All other design requests will be charged a base of $10 per 15 minutes of design time.
Q: What payment methods do you accept?
Q: I have a question about the contract...
Please don't hesitate to ask any questions about the contract. If something doesn't make sense, let me know and I am more than happy to clarify.
Q: I have an image I want you to use, but what if I'm unsure if the image/font I want to use is copyrighted?
I can work with you to figure out if the image is copyrighted or not, but if there is any ambiguity, or if I know the content is copyrighted, I will not use it in the design. If you're unsure about the copyright on an image, I suggest we find an alternate design idea.
Q: What is the copyright situation on your covers?
All images are royalty-free and sourced from Shutterstock.com. The typefaces I use are either 100% free or ones I have purchased for commercial use. The rights to these covers are good for unlimited unit sales on ebooks and up to 500k printed reproductions according to Shutterstock's Usage Limitations as of 5/1/2015. You may purchase unlimited (or an Enhanced License) for the images used in your cover at a price of $100 per image.
Q: What can I do with the book cover design once it is complete?
You can use the cover on print or web promotional materials like fliers, bookmarks, and posters, as long as it remains unmodified. You may crop and resize it if needed. To be more specific, you cannot change the cover in any way, including but not limited to color alteration, adding text, or attempts at editing imagery.
Q: Can I get the .psd or native file of my cover?
You will receive a high resolution .JPG of your cover. I generally do not offer native files of projects.
